I feel so fortunate to have the Forest of Dean on our doorstep. The 42 square mile woodland, which was formerly a royal hunting ground and centre of coal and iron mining, is now a huge scenic playground.
Although I am very aware of the many outdoor activities on offer in the area including hiking, biking, climbing and some of the best rivers in the country for canoeing, kayaking and fishing, like many busy mums, I am guilty of not finding the time to research, book and experience these fun outdoor activities with my kids. As a family we tend to get to the weekend feeling rather frazzled from a busy week and we occupy our weekends visiting attractions, which don’t require as much planning.
I was therefore delighted when contacted by the lovely folks at Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Tourist Association who asked me to share with you details of their annual family event, the Forest Activities Festival. The event brings together some of the best outdoor activity providers in the Forest of Dean and offers families the opportunity to try some activities out including archery, segways, and perfect for little (and big!) adventurers – climbing, den building, forest bushcraft, rocket science and more. If this sounds like an event your family would enjoy read on…
I love that the festival has lots on offer for the whole family including… arts & crafts sessions (photography, lace making and spinning), fun workshops for kids, live music, a street food market and a Forest Wellbeing Marquee with yoga, acupuncture, flotation and complementary therapists.
Furry members of the family are also catered for with a fun dog show, organised by the Forest of Dean Dog Rescue, with all proceeds going towards the amazing work they do. If you think you have the perfect pooch there are ten categories for you to prove it including prettiest girl, most handsome boy and fancy dress. (If you are up for a laugh, you can even dress up to match your dog!)
