To be honest, the first week of December was pretty pants. There was far too much time spent hugging sick bowls in our house and not enough time spent getting into the Christmas spirit for my liking. A festive evening stroll around the grounds of Sudeley Castle at the weekend was just what the doctor ordered. It definitely super charged all of our Christmas spirit levels!
We attended the 2017 Spectacle of Light and absolutely adored it. I remember seeing friends photos on Facebook the year before, the first year it took place, and being gutted that we didn’t have a weekend free to go and experience it for ourselves. This year I put the dates in my diary as soon as they were announced to make sure we didn’t miss out.
If you live within driving distance of Sudeley Castle I thoroughly recommend you visit. You can expect thousands of twinkly lights, projected light and water displays to music and an illuminated trail which takes you on a journey around the stunning Sudeley Castle grounds and very briefly into the castle itself. There are several Christmassy refreshment stalls serving hot chocolate, mulled wine and BBQ food and even the Salvation Army playing carols. It really does tick every single box for a TRULY festive night out.
If you’ve been before it’s worth returning as it’s completely different to last year. The trail this year is Alice in Wonderland themed. My boys loved following the White Rabbit around and meeting the characters who not only looked the part but really got into character too. The Queen of Hearts threatened to chop off their heads, (she gave a smile and wink to let my youngest son know she was joking!)
The Mad Hatter was a hoot. She came running over to us asking for directions in complete jibberish. Of course my boys, nephews and niece who were with me thought this was the funniest thing ever and loved joining in the random conversation!
Below I’ve shared a few more photos of the trail. There is also a brilliant video over on the Spectacle of Light website, although if you are planning a visit in the next couple of weeks don’t look now as it will spoil the surprise!
Website – Spectacle of Light, Sudeley Castle. Tickets available from £15.75 per adult, £9.90 per child (3-15) if purchased online in advance. As I remember saying last year. The entry price is similar to what you would pay for a family trip to the cinemas and for me there is no comparison. 90 minutes walking around an illuminated trail to music beats a movie hands down!
Address – Sudeley Castle & Gardens, Winchcombe GL54 5JD
Disclosure – We were kindly invited to attend the Spectacle of Light in return for this honest review. All thoughts and opinions are, as always, my own.
