This article shares our tips for visiting Tivoli Gardens including how to get there, what to take with you, dining options at Tivoli Gardens and costs of visiting.
We experienced a magical family day out at Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen last weekend just in time for the opening of the Winter Wonderland (mid November). We hope these tips ensure other visitors also experience a fun and memorable day at Copenhagen’s number one family attraction.

Public transportation to Tivoli Gardens
The easiest way to reach Tivoli Gardens if travelling from outside of the city is by train. Copenhagen Central Station is located next to Tivoli.
How to enter Tivoli Gardens
To experience the WOW effect enter Tivoli Gardens from the Main Entrance on Vesterbrogade rather than the Central Station entrance on Bernstorffsgade to fully experience the WOW effect!
Research Tivoli Gardens rides and costs in advance
You do not have to purchase a multi-ride ticket (which will be exchanged for a wristband) to enjoy the rides. You can instead buys tokens at the park and pay for each ride. Tokens are available at 25 DKK and each ride costs between 1 – 3 tokens. Multi ride tickets cost 209 DKK (220 DKK at weekends) so you need to do the maths and work out whether buying a multi-ride ticket is beneficial. Children under the age of one ride for free.
Be aware of the re entry charge for Tivoli Gardens
Be aware that to leave Tivoli and return later in the same day there is a charge of 25 DKK per person (over 8 years old).
Enjoy panoramic views of Tivoli Gardens
The Hot Air Balloon Ferris Wheel operates at a lovely slow pace and looks over parts of Copenhagen and the whole of Tivoli Gardens. We particularly enjoyed this ride at dusk when the thousands of ride lights and Christmas lights were lit but there was still daylight to see everything clearly. This is the view we experienced….
Carry local currency
You will need small change for food stalls etc as Tivoli adds a charge to all credit card transactions (local and foreign) of up to 2.5%
Take your pushchair
We found Tivoli to be very pushchair friendly and we had no problems accessing toilets/restaurants etc. The train and metro networks were also pushchair friendly with lifts available at every station we visited.
Healthy dining options at Tivoli Gardens
There are 43 restaurants/food stalls at Tivoli Gardens so plenty of choice however we found that the food stalls sell mainly hotdogs, burgers, chips and crepes. For a healthier option consider Wagamama’s. Healthy, nutritious and always quick to serve, a much better option for kids. Kids meals were 55 DKK for fillet chicken, rice and fresh veg. The staff were great with my boys and they were thoroughly entertained in the short wait for food with the colouring crayons provided.
Pack some snacks
As with other similar attractions, food and refreshments are a little pricey, We ordered two small pizzas and three hot drinks from an outdoor food stall at lunch time and it cost 220 DKK approximately £22.
Stay until nightfall
Tivoli Gardens are magical during the day but truly spectacular in the evening. We would definitely recommend staying until nightfall and experiencing the nightly Illumination Show on the bridge across the lake. Stand next to the fence facing the clock tower (not facing the boat ride) and get there early to guarantee a good view.
Carry extra layers
The temperatures drop at night and it can get chilly. Take note from the Scandinavians and dress your little ones in full snow suit type outfits in winter. There are lockers available to hire at the park if you do not wish to carry extra belongings around with you all day.
Warn your children of the open fires
We saw several coal fires unguarded around Tivoli which are at the perfect height for toddlers to grab at the coals and get burnt. Warn your children in advance and be on the look out for them.

We were not supplied with an events list on arrival. To ensure you do not miss any of the special events check out the website in advance of your visit to jot down show times, feeding times at aquarium, Santa visits etc as these are not advertised around the park.
