Our travel plans for 2017 & some rather exciting news!

At the beginning of last year our plans were to go on a ski holiday to France and revisit our old home, Savannah, in the USA…  Instead we went on a family water sports holiday in Greece and a cruise around the Mediterranean and Canaries!  Clearly we are hopeless at sticking to plans, mainly because we find it so difficult to choose as we enjoy all types of holidays – from camping through to cruising and everything in between!

So the plan this year is not to commit to any major travel plans just yet.  Instead we plan to go with the flow.  We have lots of ideas for our main holidays, including a camper van trip around Europe and a USA east coast fly drive but we will book later in the year when we are ready to commit.

Travel plans 2017

After a busy year of travels in 2016 the first few months of 2017 will be much quieter as we focus on some overdue house DIY (boo!)  I much prefer exploring to interior designing and the idea of attempting to do any DIY, with Harry and Charlie around, is quite frankly terrifying.  But needs must, our house needs some TLC!

Fortunately, we have a few lovely short breaks to look forward to break up the DIY weekends.  Next month we are visiting Shakespeare’s England to discover what the area has to offer for families.  We are particularly looking forward to watching the ‘Big Top Bonanza’ circus at Hatton World of Adventures, a visit to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and introducing our boys to boating by cruising along the River Avon.

We visited Stratford-upon-Avon on a few occasions when we lived onboard our narrow boat before kids and so it will be a trip down memory lane, (memory river?!) for us.  Our base for the weekend will be a 17th century stone cottage located just 4 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon called Brassknocker Cottage.  We are rather looking forward to trying this stove out in the front room…

We are already counting down the weeks for our road trip to Cornwall in March to stay with friends and their kids at the incredible Stargazers, owned and managed by St Mawes Retreats.  The company has six luxury self catering cottages which they proudly rent out to couples, families and large group of family and friends.

St Mawes Retreats were recently recommended as ‘Best Properties for a British Break’ by the Telegraph.  Karen from Mini Travellers recently stayed in one of the properties with her family, she absolutely raves about her luxury relaxing break in her review – “I can genuinely say this property was like a 5* hotel without the confines of the hotel.  It provided us with a huge amount of space, and time to relax but with some of the services that you would expect from a 5* hotel!” Read more of Karen’s review and enter a competition to win a stay for your family here.

In the spring we will be keeping our fingers firmly crossed for good weather during our stay at Tattershall Lakes, an Away Resorts holiday park. After a fun traditional seaside break with Away Resorts in Snowdonialast year we are keen to check out the newly renovated facilities of the Lincolnshire based resort.

It promises to be pretty awesome as the holiday park has recently undergone a multi-million pound makeover.  We are staying in a new TriBeCa caravan designed very much with families in mind.  Judging by the photos on their website I’m not sure we will be able to persuade our boys to leave the caravan!

One of our New Years resolutions is to spend more time together as a couple.  Harry and Charlie love spending time one on one with grandparents and we are fortunate that our parents enjoy having them.  The plan for 2017 is to make the most of it!  (Grandparents may chance their minds when they reach the stroppy teen years and we may not get the chance).

We have a couple of kid free weekends booked in to relax and enjoy some nights out wining and dining.  The first at the Marriott Hotel in York where we plan to enjoy afternoon tea at Betty’s tea room, a visit to York Minster (below) and Castle Howard.  (Any other ideas for must see attractions gratefully received!)

Our second weekend is going to be an absolute treat.  We are staying at the five-star Alexander House Hotel in Sussex and cannot wait to check out their luxurious spa facilities!

As well as having these lovely short breaks to look forward to I’m also delighted to share with you my rather exciting news…  This week I start my new job role – Editor of Trips100 and cannot wait to get stuck in building the travel blogger community and connecting travel bloggers with travel brands!

    Hi Lisa,

This is my first time on your blog.

Firstly, congrats on your amazing new adventure at Trips100!

Secondly, your post has brought back a flood of wonderful memories for me! I lived in the UK for a 8 years and did plenty of travelling. But some of my fondest memories are from the time I worked at Manor House Hotel in Moreton in Marsh.

I spent many of my lazy days off in Stratford-upon-Avon!

You and your family seem to have a jam packed year of travel ahead! Enjoy it and thanks for the blast from the past!

Such great news on your new role. And what great short breaks to look forward to.
We are off to Italy and it will be my children’s first time on a plane. We are coming back late on my son’s 8th birthday and he is fit to bursting. He happens to also be studying Romans at school so it is great timing.
